Android users are being urged to delete apps downloaded from an unverified source or risk hackers making money from them. Malware that mines cryptocurrency has been found to have been disguising itself on apps that appear legitimate. The apps run a virus in the background of the phone that uses its processing power to mine cryptocurrency for hackers, a process called cryptojacking. This can cause a user’s phone to overheat and slow down its overall performance.
In larger instances, they’ll go after large server farms or an organisation’s cloud infrastructure. “This way, they get the computing power they need. Illegally.” McAfee said there were several ways Android users could mitigate their risk. The best measure is avoiding downloading apps from unofficial sources and, if any already exist on their phones, deleting them.
