The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) reported that Colombia's unemployment rate reached 9.4% in August 2026, a 0.8 percentage point increase from the same month in 2025. This is the highest figure recorded in 20 months, indicating a deterioration in the labor market with a reduction in the employed population and an increase in the number of unemployed.
The National Administrative Department of Statistics ( DANE) reported on Wednesday, September 30, that Colombia's unemployment rate stood at 9.4% in August 2026, a 0.8 percentage point increase from the same month in 2025, which recorded 8.6%.
This figure represents an increase of 207,000 people in the unemployed condition compared to August of the previous year. According to DANE, there were 2.4 million Colombians without employment in August 2026, while the employed population decreased by 126,000 people compared to the same month in 2025, when 23.8 million employed people were counted. The employment rate fell to 57.4%, 1.1 percentage points less than in August 2025, when it was at 58.4%.

The global participation rate stood at 63.3%, compared to the 63.9% recorded in August 2025. In absolute terms, the labor force grew by 81,000 people, while the unemployed population increased by 207,000, pushing the unemployment rate to 9.4%. The unemployment rate of 9.4% in August 2026 is the highest recorded in 20 months and exceeds the record for August 2024, which was 9.2%.
It is the worst result for an August month since 2022, when the pandemic still had effects on the labor market. In the seasonally adjusted rate, which allows for comparisons between months, the indicator stood at 9.7%, a level not seen since the 9.9% in October 2024. The change in trend in the reduction of unemployment begins to reflect a sustained increase in recent months. The labor market showed different behaviors among sectors.
Análisis sectorial y cifras de informalidad laboral
The manufacturing industry concentrated the largest reduction in employed workers, while commerce and public employment recorded increases during the eighth month of the year. Informality in August 2026 was 54.9%, according to the DANE report. The employed population in the total country amounted to 23.6 million people, marking a reduction of 126,000 employed people compared to the 23.8 million people counted a year ago.
