Voters couldn’t be blamed if, come Oct. 21, they opt to spend the day in the woods, away from it all

The drama of the river meandering to the edge, and then plunging into the chasm below, the roar of the water hurtling through its epic freefall, the grandeur of the mist rising from its crashing descent.

It’s not that irrelevant a thought. On Thursday Trudeau unveiled a plan “that by the time they reach grade 8, all Canadian kids will have had the opportunity to experience camping and learn important outdoor skills.” The government would also create a “National Experience Canada Program,” enabling 75,000 kids from lower-income families to spend “a four-day adventure with their families in one of Canada’s national or provincial parks.

To ensure no one missed the point, Trudeau preceded Thursday’s announcement by paddling around in a red canoe, for no apparent reason but to give TV cameras and photographers a hard-to-resist image. It duly appeared on the CBC and other media, proving once again that media manipulation exists because so many editors are happy to be manipulated.

The Liberals are not alone in using public cash for niche tax breaks targeting desirable demographics. Stephen Harper promised in 2015 that if re-elected he’d let members of service clubs like the Kiwanis and Knights of Columbus claim their membership fees as a charitable deduction, clearly believing the sort of folks who join service clubs are fertile ground for Conservative support.
