The sacrifices AFLW athletes are making to keep the season alive are to be commended. Take Dana Hooker for example. The West Coast midfielder, who has a daughter who started prep this year, relocated to Melbourne with her team for about three weeks.During this time Hooker’s daughter started school – a proud moment for any parent – and she wasn’t there to see it.
“Being away from home for that period of time in itself can be challenging away from family, but add into the mix employment situations for a lot of the girls as well,” Hooker told the Eagles website. “All the football meetings, the three-hour time difference, and then you mix in changes to the border situation halfway through, and obviously we had COVID that came through part of the group as well.
That is just one example of the sacrifices our players are making, all on a part-time wage. Many staff members involved in the women’s programs are part-time, too, and often have to take time off work to support the team. With the condensed fixture, games have been played on weekdays, which creates added stress for players who have to take time off work from full-time jobs. I know of five players who have either lost their jobs or are looking for jobs with more flexibility.
