Graduates of the Instituto Caro y Cuervo criticize the director for using official channels to publish personal interpretations of literary works. The letter calls for a clear separation between individual opinions and the institutional voice to uphold the diversity of literary interpretation.
A letter signed by over a hundred former students of the Instituto Caro y Cuervo has raised a question that goes beyond two videos about Gonzalo Arango and Andrés Caicedo: how far can a director's personal opinion go when using an official public institution's channels?
The graduates of the Institute's graduate programs have asked the director, Sergio Esteban Vélez, for a public explanation of the publications disseminated this week on the entity's official social networks. They believe that these spaces cannot become platforms for expressing personal positions on authors, works, or cultural issues, because they represent a state institution with a defined academic and research mission.
Uso adecuado de redes públicas
The graduates argue that the Institute's social networks and communication channels are public in nature and should therefore be used to promote its institutional mission, not to broadcast personal opinions. They stress that Colombian literature is open to multiple interpretations and that the Institute's role is not to impose a single view but to preserve the diversity of linguistic and literary heritage.
The letter cites constitutional principles regarding freedom of religion and the secular nature of the state as reasons why the director's comments-which contain strong religious and moral judgments-are inappropriate for an official government channel. The signatories are asking for a public dialogue within the Institute's community before any official positions on literary or linguistic matters are fixed, to ensure that the institution's tradition of respect for diversity is maintained.
