Vice President José Manuel Restrepo delivered a scathing critique of the economic strategies employed by former President Gustavo Petro, dismissing them as theoretical failures that harmed the nation's prosperity. Speaking at the Acopi Congress, Restrepo advocated for a policy of sustainable growth, contrasting it sharply with the 'degrowth' philosophy promoted by the previous administration. He highlighted severe financial mismanagement under Petro, including a massive drop in private investment and inefficient public spending, which the current government is now striving to correct through international cooperation and fiscal reform.
In a recent address, Vice President José Manuel Restrepo criticized the economic policies of the previous government, led by President Gustavo Petro. Restrepo argued that the Petro administration's theories, particularly regarding economic growth and employment, were flawed and led to poor financial outcomes for the country.
He specifically cited the 'theory of degrowth' used by Petro, suggesting it is more appropriate for wealthy nations reducing excess consumption rather than for underdeveloped economies. The current government, under Abelardo De La Espriella, has taken a different approach to rectify what they describe as a 'lamentable' state of public finances. De La Espriella has initiated discussions with the International Monetary Fund to address the significant debt and deficit issues inherited from the previous administration.
